Clatsop Weavers strives to provide an environment
for weavers in which they can perfect their
skills, learn new ones, and exchange ideas.
Members of the guilds come from the North Oregon
Coast and South Washington Coast. The present
number of members is 18.
The Clatsop Weavers' Guild was originally an
Oregon guild, which met in members' homes. In
1982 the first Washington member joined, and
present membership is about half Oregon and
half Washington. By 1985 meetings were being
held in Gearhart. When the facility became unavailable,
meetings were moved to Warrenton. In 1994 the
Ilwaco Heritage Museum offered the guild a place
to hold meetings. It has been a pleasant partnership,
as the guild helps with many community events
taking place at the Museum, and is able to take
advantage of many things the Museum has to offer.
Guild members restored and repaired an old Union
Rug Loom which was donated to the museum, as
well as loaning a 4-harness loom which is used,
along with the rug loom, for demonstrations.
The guild publishes a quarterly newsletter
which is distributed to members only. Meetings
are held monthly except July and August, on
the second Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. Most meetings
are held at Ilwaco Heritage Museum in Ilwaco,
Washington. September potluck and Christmas
Social are usually held in a private home. Most
years an all-day summer workshop is held in
July or August. A spinning group within the
guild also meets monthly. Anyone interested
in weaving and/or spinning may join. Annual
dues are $12.50.

The Clatsop Weavers take part in many regional
fairs and festivals by arranging demonstrations
and exhibits of weaving and spinning. We work
with the Ilwaco Museum in some of their activities,
as well as with children's groups. During 1998
members participated in the Finnish-American
Folk Festival in Naselle, WA, Oregon State Fair
in Salem, Oregon, Cranberrian Fair in Ilwaco,
did a program for Peninsula Arts Association
in Ocean Park, WA, and had several teaching
sessions for beginning spinners and weavers.
Each year we give a grant to one of our members
to be used in further development of her weaving
skills. This year the grant was split between
two members, to enable them to take the Sharon
Alderman color workshop which the guild sponsored.
