Desert Fiber Arts (DFA) is a guild supporting
the fiber artists in the Tri-Cities (Richland,
Pasco and Kennewick, Washington) and the surrounding
area. DFA's purpose is to promote participation
in and appreciation of fine craftsmanship related
to the fiber arts. Our work in fiber arts derives
from the techniques and materials of a textile,
basketry, or paper making tradition. We are
a non-profit organization affiliated with the
Association of Northwest Weavers' Guilds and
the Handweavers Guild of America. Our current
membership is 61.
Membership benefits include a monthly newsletter,
use of extensive DFA library, rental of guild-owned
equipment, and participation in various study
groups.
Our monthly meeting is a forum for fiber artists
to share ideas and solutions that they have
discovered in their art form. The goals of the
program planners are to offer new concepts through
a speaker or hands-on activity, and to provide
a setting for encouragement and mentoring of
fellow fiber artists.
Annual dues are $18 for each individual (plus
$1 for additional family members).
Due June 1.
Our members are active in weaving, spinning,
feltmaking, basketry, knitting, paper making,
and other fiber arts techniques.
DFA sponsors workshops taught by well-known
fiber artists. Members educate the public about
the fiber arts through exhibits and demonstrations.
They also form study groups according to their
special interests.
Current study groups are:
Great wheels, a spinning and hand-work group,
meets weekly.
Weaving Study Group, meets weekly on a seasonal
basis.
Tapestry Study Group, meets monthly.
Highlights of the Year
DFA's general meeting is held on the third
Thursday of each month, September through May
in the Tri- Cities. About half of the meetings
are scheduled in the evening and half during
the day. All general meetings are open to the
public.
