Chilliwack is located in the eastern Fraser
Valley Approximately one hour from Vancouver,
B.C. The Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild
was formed in 1974 and is currently housed in
the Chilliwack Community Arts Centre. We currently
have 40 members from Chilliwack and the surrounding
area. Demonstrations of weaving and spinning
in schools, care facilities, malls and various
other community locations became regular activities
for guild members and continue each year.
The first Craft Sale was held in November 1975
and in 1976 the Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers
had their own division for the first time at
the annual Chilliwack Exhibition with fifty-two
exhibits entered in eight classes. Guild members
continue to participate each year in the Chilliwack
Exhibition in August and the Arts Council's
Chirstmas Craft Sale in November.
Over the years guild members have participated
in the Association of Northwest Weavers Guilds
Conferences, Sheep to Shawl Competitions, and
most recently gallery shows "In the Beginning--Fibers,
Threads, Fabric" and "Fraser Valley
Seasons" held in the Downstaris Gallery
of the Community Arts Centre.
The looms in the guild rooms continue to be
busy with members producing rugs, tea towels,
cushions and table runners. The members meet
from September until June on the first and third
Thursday of each month plus an informal drop-in
each Thursday morning. A newsletter is published
five times a year and distributed to all guild
members and vaious other guilds within B.C.
