The
Edmonton Weavers' Guild was founded in 1953
with Mary Sandin as the first president. Mary
Sandin was famous for co-editing Loom Music
with Ethel Henderson from 1944 to 1965, as well
as teaching at the Banff School of Fine Arts
and helping to found the Guild of Canadian Weavers
and its tests. The Edmonton Weavers' Guild is
still very active with 145 members.
The Edmonton Guild has its present home in the
Prince of Wales Armouries in Edmonton. The Armouries
is a lovely heritage building, housing among
other residents, the Archives of the City of
Edmonton. Four weaving workshops meet bi-weekly,
as well as two spinning groups. From the Get
Sett group (organized by students of a basic
weaving course) to the More Than Four, which
studies complex weaves, there is something for
every weaver in this guild.
In addition to workshops the Guild holds 5
general meetings a year at which invited speakers
share their knowledge and expertise in various
facets of the fibre arts' field. Basic and intermediate
tuition is offered to members and the public,
as well as one-day workshops which have proved
to be popular. From time to time seminars lasting
3 to 5 days are taught by internationally recognized
weavers.
Membership is $50.00 a year which includes
use of our extensive library, Webs & Wheels
(our newsletter), access to our well equipped
studio, the study groups, and meetings. Members
also have opportunities to demonstrate and to
enter your creations in our annual Guild Sale.
