Eight
enterprising women initiated the Greater Vancouver
Weavers' and Spinners' Guild in 1935. Today
we have one hundred and fifty members. Interesting
monthly programs, workshops and special interest
study groups are arranged to appeal to beginners
as well as more advanced weavers and spinners.
The guild sponsors lectures, shows, demonstrations
and exhibitions to promote and support weaving
and spinning in the greater Vancouver area including
Vancouver, West Vancouver, North Vancouver,
Burnaby, Delta, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam,
Maple Ridge, and other suburbs.
The Purposes of the Greater Vancouver Weavers'
and Spinners' Guild are as follows:
To promote, encourage and improve the art and
craft of weaving and spinning.
To provide an opportunity for the sharing of
knowledge, skill and ideas among the guild members.
To emphasize the importance of achieving and
maintaining the highest possible standards of
excellence in all work.
To collect current literature and other materials
relating to the art and craft of weaving, spinning
and dyeing and to make these available to all
members of the guild.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest
in spinning, weaving or related fiber arts,
and new members are very welcome. The membership
fee is CAN$25.00 per year. Members may take
advantage of the scholarship fund and also make
use of a variety of rental equipment. Our library,
perhaps one of the finest in the world, contains
over one thousand books, periodicals and videos.
General meetings include Show & Tell and
Programs provided by members, local specialists,
and prominent international craftspeople. Meetings
alternate between day and evening to accommodate
busy schedules.
The guild meets on the third Thursday
of every month (except for July and August)
at:
West Point Grey Community Centre
4397 West 2nd Avenue
Vancouver BC
V6R 1K4
September, November, January, March, and May
meetings begin at noon, and October, December,
February, April, and June meetings begin at
7:30 p.m. We are proud to produce the best monthly
newsletter in B.C. and possibly Canada.
Workshops are arranged during the year on topics
of interest to the members. Special Interest
Groups provide an opportunity to study and learn
in a more informal way. The Guild also sponsors,
lectures, shows, and exhibitions to promote
and support weaving and spinning in the Greater
Vancouver Area.
