The guild is located at Oceanside, on Vancouver
Island, B.C. with 31 members. Guild purpose
is to encourage and teach the art of Weaving
and Spinning and all related fields of this
art.
Our meetings are held on the third Monday of
the month, Sept. to June, with an informal spinning
group getting together most Wednesdays.
It all started with 8 students, an instructor
and a desire to learn to weave. The year was
1989, the instructor Elaine Duncan, resident
artist at the Old School House Arts Centre and
the students were fibre enthusiasts from the
Parksville/Qualicum Beach area on Vancouver
Island, B.C. Alice Ross was a mentor to this
fledgling group.
The group met informally in people’s
homes for the next few years, until the number
of members and looms became unwieldy. Looking
for a permanent location the group incorporated
as a non-profit society in 1991, In 1998, with
the assistance of community volunteers, renovations
were started in the 2 rooms upstairs in the
train station, called The Loft. On Feb. 1, 1999
our guild moved into its present permanent location.
Over the years we have participated in sheep
to shawl events, workshops, and demonstrated
at various local community group events.
In 2000, the guild hosted the Vancouver Island,
Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast, Weavers and
Spinners Retreat at Tight-Na-Mara. Twice annually,
the guild holds a sale, at the Rotary; House,
one for two days in the spring, and one the
last Saturday of Nov.
