Sacajawea Handweavers Guild
The Sacajawea Handweavers Guild spans the Columbia River with members from Cowlitz, Lewis, Clark and Wahkiakum counties in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon.
The Guild has been functioning since the 1950's, meeting in various places, such as member's homes, a weaving shop, and a local mall. During recent years, a permanent home in one of Longview's historic buildings has been established. The current owners of the building added a walk-in closet for the Guild's sole use for the library and equipment for members' use and demonstrations. Biennially, in October to celebrate National Spinning and Weaving Week, the Guild puts up a display in the Longview Public Library where demonstrations allow adults and children a chance to try their hand at weaving and spinning. In August each year, there are demonstrations on the grounds of the Columbia Empire Fair in Longview. In 1989 the Guild put on a month-long display with demonstrations at the Cowlitz County Historical Museum in conjunction with Washington State Centennial.
The Guild publishes a monthly newsletter (with the exception of the summer months) for members. Meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month, September through May, excepting November and December when a combined meeting is held on the 1st Thursday of December. The May meeting is a dinner held in a member's home. All other meetings are held in The Community Room, #314, in the Merk building, at the corner of Broadway and Commerce in Longview. Meeting time is 4:30 p.m. for business, with the program at 6:00 p.m.
The Guild has a scholarship program with grants to encourage members to take workshops to further develop their skills.
