The
Tacoma Weavers Guild is celebrating its 68th
Birthday this year in November. In the year
2000, TWG was chosen for the Margaret K. Williams
Art Award for "substantial contributions
to the development of the Arts in Pierce County"
by the Pierce County Arts Commission. The guild
is dedicated to the promotion of hand weaving
and related fiber arts, and demonstrations and
exhibits of these crafts for the enrichment
of the public's knowledge.
Programs in 2003-4 include Kathy Brassill on
Crafts Travel in Great Britain & Ireland,
a presentation of the Bateman Collection with
Nancy Tracy, Mary Black sharing stories of Virginia
Harvey, Susan Wilson on Crackle, with a workshop
to follow on Treadling Variations, Roberta Lowes
on techniques for mixed warps, Theresa Mertens
on Ancient Textiles, and a Holiday potluck,
fashion show and gift exchange. We'll finish
the year with a picnic in June. A group project
and guild competition this spring will be scarves.
Our meetings are held the second Friday of
each month except July and August, 9:30 a.m.
to 2:00 p.m. at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church,
7410 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA. 98465.
The guild sponsors a variety of activities
which require smaller group efforts, including
Study Groups for Sewing with Handwovens, Spinning,
and other ongoing groups as needed. Standing
Committees include Workshops, Conference, Sheep
to Shawl, and Community Outreach programs.
Our Library contains many volumes, some videos,
3 looms, a bobbin winder, drum carder, spinning
wheel, rag cutter, warping boards, and smaller
equipment.
The guild spends many hours participating in
various activities teaching children about weaving
and spinning, weaving mats for the "Empty
Bowls" soup sale to benefit the Emergency
Food Network, supplying looms and teachers for
"First Night" celebration on New Years
Eve downtown, meeting with home school groups
at the art center, etc.
An annual sale is held in November in conjunction
with ART AT WORK, in downtown Tacoma. It has
been very successful, giving some people the
chance to sell their things for the first time.
This year we will be selling our recently produced
calendar & swatch book, A YEAR OF HONEYCOMB.
New members are quickly assimilated into the
guild by including them in some of these activities
if they choose. It is a rare occasion when the
president doesn't immediately have a volunteer
when she asks for someone to do something.
