In the 1960's four enthusiastic,would-be weavers
began a group that became the Whidbey Weavers'
Guild. Two of these four were spinners and all
were ready learners who wanted to share and
improve. The group quickly expanded. Today the
same spirit of adventure, learning, sharing,
and good fellowship persists among the more
than one hundred members.
Meetings
The
Guild meets on the first Thursday of each month
(except January, July and August) at Camp Casey
in Coupeville. A short business meeting is followed
by members' informal "Show and Tell"
of their latest projects and discoveries. Lunch
is followed by a formal program (workshop, lecture
or panel discussion) by members or a visiting
expert.
Events
In
the summer we gather for our annual picnic.
In August we sponsor the Fiber Arts booth at
Island County Fair in Langley. This is our opportunity
to show our work, demonstrate to the public,
and promote the crafts of weaving, spinning,
felting and basket making. Each April the Guild
sponsors a Spin-in featuring a guest instructor.
This popular event, which draws participants
from Oregon and British Columbia as well as
Washington, provides exchange of information,
hands-on experience with different wheels, and
an opportunity to purchase supplies from many
vendors.
Education
The
Guild offers workshops by well-known fiber artists,
Guild members, and local artists with special
expertise. It also awards scholarships to encourage
participation in workshops and fiber arts education.
Weaving study groups meet monthly and choose
topics for in-depth study. Guild members also
support several informal unaffiliated spinning
groups that meet at least twice a month, both
during the day and evenings.
Resources
Our library has a wealth of books, magazines
Our library has a wealth of books, magazines
and binders of samples. A book report by a member
is a part of each regular meeting. The Guild
also has some equipment for loan to members.
Guild members with special expertise or interests
are always ready to help.
Communications
The
Guild issues a newsletter, The Whidbey Webster,
five times a year. For those who cannot always
attend the meetings this offers a link to their
textile-loving friends. The Guild publishes
an annual yearbook containing a directory of
members, officers, committee managers, and a
schedule of meetings, events, and speakers.
