Sandra Loeffelmann’s expertise is in the use of natural dyes. She has extensive experience in the utilization of organic materials, natural dye extracts, and pigments on nearly all substrates. Surface design with natural colors and micas is her specialty. She is currently involved with research, design, and teaching, both from her studio in Bellingham, WA and for Earthues in Seattle. Sandra graduated from the Academy of Fashion and Trade in Vienna, and with dual degrees in Fiber Arts and Anthropology from the University of Oregon. She has taught natural dyeing, felting, and surface design in Europe and America.
Sandra enjoys travelling and would gladly entertain all teaching and consulting opportunities at any time of year. The following classes are regularly taught in Bellingham and at Earthues in Seattle.
Workshops/Programs
- A BAG OF TRICKS - Wet felting basics. During this two-day workshop you will learn about different types of wool, felting traditions, all basic felting and decorating processes, how to make a pattern for 3-dimensional pieces, trouble shooting and finishing techniques. (2 days)
- BAG OF DREAMS – Learn how to felt, create, and decorate the bag you have always dreamed of. (1 day)
- SILK DYEING WORKSHOP - Create vivid hues on silk with mother nature’s gifts, such as roots, bark, blossoms and bugs. 6 square silks in two different sizes will be dyed. Use them as scarves, play silks for your child, or as gift wrapping for priceless presents. (1 day)
- ECO SCARVES – Learn to use natural dye extracts which have been carefully formulated to produce the fashion colors of the coming year. Silk and organic handwoven cotton scarves will be dyed. (1 day)
- SPINNERS DELIGHT – Harness the rainbow and pour it into your hand spun yarns. The goal of this workshop is to teach you how to scour, mordant and naturally dye your own yarns. Please bring a pound of your white, grey or beige wool/alpaca/mohair/other yarn and be prepared for some alchemy! (2 days)
- DYE FOR YOUR BABY - Learn to use traditional resist techniques and experience the magic of the indigo vat to color hats, onesies, socks, shirts or pants for your baby. This is a fun and inspiring workshop for conscious parents to be. (1 day)
- INTRODUCTION TO SURFACE DESIGN - Create a rich and ecological palette of harmonious colors from mother nature. The focus of this workshop is on directly painting and mark-making on fabric with natural dye extracts. Various traditional and alternative resist techniques will also be explored. (2 days)
- THE MAGIC OF INDIGO - In this class, the fascinating blue dye found in every culture since antiquity will be revealed. A rich array of blues will be produced and over-dyeing will create luscious purples and greens. (2 days)
- ROOTS, BERRIES, BUGS AND BARK - Discover the color secrets of the plant and insect world, your spice rack and the garden. Each participant will dye from a selection of fibers, yarns, buttons, socks, small pouches and hankies. (1 day)
- THE EXTRACTED DYE - This workshop is an introduction to the world of natural dye extracts. We will discuss how they are made, where they come from and learn the techniques for using them. Indigo will give us fabulous blues, purples and greens. (2 days)
- EARTH PIGMENTS - This class explores earth ochres to create brilliant hues and a sense of light. Discover the secret processing methods which yield paints suitable for textiles and paper. These natural pigments can be painted, stamped, stenciled and even silk screened. (2 days)
