I have always been interested in some of the lesser known, more unusually and yes time consuming weaving techniques. At present these include velvet weaving, Saganishiki (Japanese Gold Brocade) and Andean back strap weaving.

Programs

  • Velvet weaving including the woven embellishment of velvet -This program will give a brief history of velvet, how to weave velvet and various ways of embellishing velvet including bouclé, brocade and various ground weaves.
  • Saganishiki (Japanese Gold Brocade) - This technique was developed in Saga, Japan about 1820 and is one of Japan’s National Treasures. A demonstration on the special loom is included. The warp is paper and weft is silk!

Workshop

  • The velvet weave - Velvet can be woven on most any loom. It’s a matter of scale. This round robin workshop includes rug velvet and finer velvet weaves, using yarn as fine as sewing thread.
